The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) is an active member of the Substance Use Program and provides peer support services to patient with Substance Use and serious/chronic mental illness. Under the supervision of the Manager of Substance Use Services, the CPRS will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a patient advocate, providing patient information and peer support for patients in the Chase Brexton outpatient Substance Use Program or outpatient Behavioral Health program. Additional responsibilities include working with an interdisciplinary team to develop and implement a treatment plan, teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience, and providing outreach services to non-adherent patients by assessing structural barriers to care in order to address and develop an action plan to eliminate such barriers.

Responsibilities

• Interact with patients on a daily basis to discuss ways to cope and potentially incorporate methods, such as 12-step programs, to help clients toward recovery.
• Assist patients in working with their assigned therapist to determine the steps they need to take in order to achieve their recovery goals.
• Utilizing tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) will be responsible for facilitating two Peer Support Groups sessions to teach patient how to identify and combat negative self-talk and how to identify and overcome fears by providing a forum which allows group members to share their experience.
• Use literature, media, other tools to help patients gain home, learn to identify their strength and comeback the challenges of addiction and mental illness
• Assist the patients assigned therapist in obtaining community services to support the individual patient recovery needs.
• Lead and promotes the four “Smoking Cessation” groups annually.
• Setting up aftercare plans
• Oversee the weekly Patient Orientation sessions that are held during the morning and evening hours to meet with new patients in order to evaluate their health and substance problem
• Maintain the bulletin board in the patient waiting area by re-stocking it with patient education materials
• Help link patients to vocational, and employment and training programs

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Required: Related experience in administrative support role.
• Desired: At least one year experience in healthcare setting.
• Required: CPR Certification
• Having personal experience relevant to services provided with 5 – 10 years of recovery
• Actively participating in a recovery program
• MABPCB Certified Peer Recovery Specialist
• Experience facilitating peer support groups and smoking cession groups
• Completion of the BH2- Breaking the Habit in Behavioral Health: New Hope for Clients Who Smoke- Multiple Session Group Smoking Cessation program
• Experience with the LGBT community
• Knowledge of social media applications and online forums (preferred)
• Valid driver’s license.
• Preferred: Registered Peer Supervisor (RPS)
