This 1-day course provides an overview on the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) to address various behavior changes, and builds understanding of the process of individual change in healthcare settings. MI is an intervention with a set of practices for clinicians that are designed to increase client engagement and retention in services. MI helps providers enhance the client-provider relationship, specifically in addressing treatment needs, goal-setting, and understanding and incorporating the client’s personal concerns. The course introduces the rationale and need to discuss health risks and behavior change with clients and equips providers with the necessary knowledge and comfort in using MI skills effectively with clients. An overview of the processes and skills utilized in this intervention are taught using didactic and interactive exercises to demonstrate how providers are able to garner client involvement in the behavior change process. This is the fifth required training module in the Sexual Health in Recovery Facilitator Certification course.
