Training Description: Harm Reduction for Peers
Course Title: Harm Reduction for Peers
CEUs: 5 (Harm Reduction Domain)
This 5-CEU training provides Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS) and professionals in the recovery field with an in-depth understanding of harm reduction as both a philosophy and a set of practical strategies. Participants will explore the history and principles of harm reduction, its role alongside abstinence-based models, and the ethical responsibilities of peers working with individuals who choose non-abstinence recovery pathways.
Through a mix of educational content, demonstrations, and scenario-based discussions, participants will learn about safer use practices, syringe service programs, housing-first models, and the use of naloxone and fentanyl test strips in overdose prevention. Special emphasis will be placed on crisis support, legal protections, reflective practice, and CPRS ethics.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
-
Explain the philosophy and core principles of harm reduction (dignity, choice, autonomy, safety).
-
Distinguish between harm reduction and abstinence-based approaches.
-
Demonstrate knowledge of overdose prevention tools including naloxone administration and fentanyl test strips.
-
Apply CPRS ethical standards when supporting individuals with non-abstinence-based goals.
-
Reflect on personal values and biases to strengthen ethical peer practice.
This training is designed to be engaging, practical, and directly applicable to peer recovery work. It meets the requirements for 5 CEUs in the Harm Reduction domain for CPRS recertification.
