Peer support specialists have long been identified as critical in proving support to people who use drugs. Their unique and powerful lived experience coupled with their ability to navigate complex treatment and recovery systems equips them with the capacity to authentically engage people in need of support. Despite the invaluable services that peers provide, they are hardly impervious to experiences of stigma and bias from their own employers. The stress resultant from these types of experiences can compromise peer retention and can even increase the risk of relapse. To effectively address the ongoing overdose epidemic, to promote access to life-saving treatment like medication assisted treatment (MAT), it is essential that organizations establish the ethical framework needed to both begin to address long-standing institutional biases and to effectively honor the lived experiences and contributions of peers.
